Tribute for the Transgender day of Remembrance, 2008 The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the Remembering Our Dead web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hesters murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved. Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people. We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating. The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesnt perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us whove died by anti-transgender violence. Chioma Anahs art work encourages serious reflection and exploration into the relationships between Introspection, Transformation and Mortality. Her Mask series in particular explores Jungian concepts such as: Archetypes; The Collective Unconscious; Shadow; Puella Aeternus ( the eternal child); Self; Ego; Persona and Individuation; and The Wounded Healer. Chiomas art work is also influenced by the writings of Sigmund Freud, Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Otto Rank and Anais Nin. For high resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG0zmn7iOH0&fmt=18 From a 1972 LP recording by Leo Brouwer that was never reissued as a CD. Joaquín Nin-Culmell's Six Variations on a Theme of Luis Milán (1945; based on Milán's Pavana VI) are performed here by Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer. The world premiere of these variations was by José Rey de la Torre at New York's Town Hall on 10 November 1947. The piece is a series of meditations on 16th century Spanish rhythms and colors. "Joaquín María Nin-Culmell (b Berlin, 5 Sept 1908; d Berkeley, CA, 14 Jan 2004). American composer and pianist of Cuban descent. Son of musician Joaquín Nin and singer Rosa Culmell, he began his musical studies in Barcelona with Granados student Conchita Badia and later studied at the Schola Cantorum and the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Dukas. Cortot and Viñes were among his piano teachers. During the summers of 1930, 1932 and 1934 Nin-Culmell studied with de Falla and in 1936 gave the first performance of de Falla's Pour le tombeau de Paul Dukas. In 1939 he moved to the USA, where he continued to give premières of works by Spanish composers. His teaching appointments included positions at Middlebury College (Vermont; 1939-1940), Williams College (Massachusetts; 1940-1950) and the University of California, Berkeley (1950-1974). In 1962 he was named a corresponding member of the Real Academia de San Fernando. Nin-Culmell strove in his works to capture the spirit, rather than the letter, of Spanish folk music, often changing the rhythm, mode or melodic contour of traditional melodies. A number of his works, including the ballet El burlador de Sevilla and the opera La Celestina, draw upon Spanish literature." from Carol A. Hess at Grove Music Online (acc. 12 Nov 2008; slightly modified) Additional biographical information and a list of works can be found at http://www.joaquin-nin-culmell.com/aboutjoaquin.htm Recording: Leo Brouwer "Les classiques de Cuba" 1972. Erato STU 70669 (Europe)/Musical Heritage Society MHS 3839 (USA). In this recording, Brouwer played a guitar built by Francisco Simplicio in Barcelona (1926). Portrait of Nin-Culmell by Paul Swan (c. 1924). In response to the curious: yes, the young woman next to Nin-Culmell in the first photograph is his sister, the writer Anaïs Nin. Sorry, I do not have the score.
