My essay topic is as follows
Rent and watch the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast. Explain how Disney constructs the relationship between men and women differently from the way Angela Carter does in "The Tiger's Bride"
So i don't expect any of you to go and read the tiger's bride
but if any of you have watched and still remember beauty and the beast ( i never saw it) can you tell me how they construct the relationship between men and women?
for example things like abusive, kind, accepting and how you know that?
THANKS
I have to read a book by Angela Carter for english and I'm trying to decide between The Magic Toyshop and Nights at the Circus. Any suggestions? or another one of her books would be fine too. Also I can choose between Alice Walker, Kate Chopin, Carol Shields, or Doris Lessing. Any suggestions please? I want a GOOD book that also has some depth. I'm not just looking for an easy read. Thanks so much! :)
I am a college student currently taking a History course. My professor gave us a list of over 200 books to choose three from, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I am not a History major myself, so I would like something that might be a little less complex of a read, under 200 pages would be preferred as I am taking a very heavy course load this semester, however the length really is not all that much of a concern. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have a copy of Heroes and Villains by Angela Carter. I know the tile is currently out of print. I did a search on Amazon to see how much a newer copy would run me. I found two different prices for two different versions and don't know why there's a price difference.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Heroes+and+Villians+Angela+Carter
That's the cheaper version.
And here's the more expensive version.

can you come up with other ideas to if you don't like any that are up there?
Cleveland is the last name
I'm writing a novel and I need names for my characters.
I have a few listed for the type of characters I want.
Main Character who is extremely beautiful and sexy without knowing: Desiree "Desi" Rhoades, Felicia Murdoch, Angela Compton.
Dictating, popular friend: Holly Jensen, Debbie Lukemeyer
Hot Jock: Carter Seigle, Joseph Springsteen, Jeff Danes
I want to read something new. Something interesting :)
To give you an idea my favorite books are:
The Dice Man - Luke Rhineheart
A Clockwork Orange - Antony Burgess
Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell
The Bloody Chamber- Angela Carter
Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
Does anyone have any good literary suggestions for mee :) ?
Can anyone help explain what this question means:
'how Carter's use of narrative voice recreates the world of her main character'
it's just mainly the recreation of the world so answers don't have to relate to Angela Carter.
Thanks
Thank you so much guys!
I think I was confusing myself because the first bullet point was about setting and atmosphere! And I kept telling myself that setting and atmosphere would be part of that world!
Thanks again!
This mine:
I often go to sleep with pajama bottoms, socks and a t-shirt on. When I awake I am naked. This is a popular phenomenon, known in scientific circles as theft. My family members steal my clothes in the night and sell them down the market. I often walk to work and see kids wearing the clothes that only the night before I was sleeping in. It is a disturbing development.
The most popular misconception about dreams is that they are interesting. There is nothing on earth duller than listening to other people tell you their dreams. It is like listening to a story without proper characters, narrative and form. Rather like reading this question, in fact. I digress though, because dreams actually mean nothing at all sort of like facts and statistics. Facts and statistics can mean anything, but they rarely do. Men need statistics far more than women. As Angela Carter once told me: "Men think in feet, women are the feared other than will unravel your mind with baroque images of the subversion of order." I think she was drunk at the time. Lovely woman - although she doesn't share my birthday.
---------------------------------------
I asked them to analyze my dream.
WTF hahah
what do tigers and lambs refer to? margaret atwood stated that the characters in The Bloody Chamber short stories were either tigers or lambs etc but how do i describe the difference?
I'm beginning to tire of some of the contemporary books, could someone recommend (and include a brief plot description) some classic books?
I really loved the Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter (which isn't really "classic") does anyone know of any kind of bizarre, borderline creepy but still beautifully written books like that?
I also love Frankenstein and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but hated the Scarlet Letter
The whole question it'self:
How does angela carter use the 3rd person narrative voice to present opinions to the reader on the characters in the story of "The Company of wolves"?
K so this is my names list for my baby. Pick your favorite First name, then favorite middle name. The last name will be Kittleson.
Girls 1st Names: Angela, Rebbecca, Kelsey, Katie, Amber, Jamie, Maggie, and Aurora
Boys 1st Names: Alvin, B.J, Westly, Josh, Darren, Daniel, Aaren, Jonny, and James (I know it's comen but it's a family name.)
Girls Middle Name: Violet, Ivy, May, Faith, Jean. (Jean would be after my grandmother.)
Boys Middle Name: James (if not 1st pick), Jonny (again, if not 1st pick), Kyle, Carter, Samuel, or Thomas (in loving memory of my grandpa).
When I say couple, I mean your favourite Todd/Lovett pair...Personally I love Patti LuPone and Michael Ceveris, their voices are so individual and strong and their chemistry is really Electric, they nail the comedy and the sinister elements brilliantly.
Then, following closely behind Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou.
And a few miles behind...Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter(I like them, but not as Sweeney and Lovett, not strong enough).
Hello,i want to help and encourage my friend in completing a story she wrote and i decided to paste some of the pages here and please rate and tell me what do you think and is it worth it to continue and BTW SHES JUST 13 AND ITS HER FIRST STORY !!!!!
1
I lay down in bed, with soundless tears streaming endlessly down my cheeks. Pictures of my parents rolled in my head, which reminded me of pleasant memories. I didn’t know if I could do this. I didn’t know if I could bare the responsibility that hung on my shoulders.
My dad passed away a month ago, which left my mother to parent us, my thirteen year old sister, Grace, and me. She wasn’t able to handle the loss of her beloved husband and the single-parenting of two teenaged daughters, which struck her. She had a history of high blood pressure, which sent her to the hospital. She couldn’t bear the loneliness any more, and joined dad in heaven, just a day before my eighteenth birthday, leaving me in charge of my thirteen year old sister.
As a legal adult, I got custody on Grace, and the social services sent an employee to check on us every month or so.
They informed me that I had to get a decent job and manage to give Grace a happy living. Right now, I have a half-time job, a server in a fast food restaurant, and I have applied for another, in an bookstore.
I cocked my head to look at the time on the digital watch on my side table. 7:03, it said.
I rubbed the tears away, and got off the bed and strolled down the corridor to Grace’s room. I cracked the door just the tiniest bit to see if she was awake. She was fully dresses and was lying on the bed on her torso, legs crossed in the air, reading a book.
When she saw me, her eyes popped out of her sockets.
“Angela? Why are your eyes so puffy?” she questioned.
I doubted whether to tell her or not. Grace was very emotional about mum and dad passing away, and I tried very hard to not let her see me when I was having an emotional breakdown.
“From sleeping,” I croaked, in what I hoped was a convincing answer.
“Oh.” She looked relieved but there was the faintest trace of suspicion on her face. She looked down and continued reading.
Grace had beautiful green eyes and golden brown hair that hung to her shoulders. She was medium-sized and athletic. I believed that she was going to be very difficult for me to handle, like those troubled teenage kids that you saw on TV, but Grace didn’t give me a hard time at all. She helped me with chores, did her studying and homework, and got A’s in all her exams and assignments. She was really comfortable to be around.
“Get ready for breakfast,” I reminded her. She nodded and continued reading.
I headed to the bathroom and took a warm, rapid shower. I brushed my teeth, wrapped myself in a towel and went to my room. I took out a pink sweater and a pair of jeans, put them on, and combed my long brown hair. I tied it up in a high ponytail, and stared at myself in the mirror. I saw a wide-eyed girl staring back at me with light brown eyes, the faintest trace of puffiness, surrounding her eyes. A few brown hair strands were out of place. Her hand reached out and adjusted them. I quickly made the bed and went downstairs.
Grace was waiting at the table when I arrived. I quickly made her some scrambled eggs and poured her some orange juice, which she eyed appreciatively. I made myself some hot coco and went through the mail on the counter.
One was from the social services, which I kept for last. Another was from some distant relatives. I ripped the envelope open and pulled the letter out. It contained the usual, the how are you’s and if you need any help just give us a call’s. I put it aside, and gave it an appreciative look, promising myself to answer to that after I got back from college.
I went through the rest and stopped at the last envelope. It was from the bookstore. I hastily opened the envelope and started reading.
I felt Grace’s stare on my face. This was it. We desperately needed money. “YES!” I exclaimed. Grace ran over to me.
“Congratulations!” she shouted happily as she ran over to hug me. I hugged her back.
“Come on, let’s tell Amy the great news.”
“Let’s.”
Amy Carter was my best friend since eighth grade. We met on the first day in Art class, and we have been close friends since then.
Her parents were over helpful towards Grace and me. They brought us lunch sometimes, sent Amy over to help us with chores and groceries, and offered to our school funds, which I refused immediately.
I grabbed my keys, backpack and the unopened social services letter.
I jumped into the car, placed the key in the ignition, and turned the engine on. The car was a gift from my parents that I got when I received my driving license.
It was a pleasant day in the middle of October. Dry leaves covered the ground. The sun was hidden between white, fluffy clouds. I rolled the windows down to let the cool breeze in.

Rename all of these characters. The names must start with the same letter as the original name, the one listed. For Renesmee, it still has to be a combination of the both sets of parents names, the ones you listed. Most creative names get best answer!

Thinking a LONG way into the future, I was just considering names I like today, and for girls I came up with:
Angela & Jocelyn.
For Angela, I like the middle name Carter, for some reason, although that'd be more like a last name, or a boy's name, wouldn't it? (If you have suggestions, please share)
For Jocelyn, I have no idea about middle names (please suggest one, and also other girls names starting with J, other than "Josephine").
For boys I like
Henry Jake, whom I would call Jake, and Thomas, for whom I don't have a middle name. (please suggest one)
What do you think of the names
Angela Carter
Jocelyn
Henry Jake "Jake"
and
Thomas?
Thanks so much!!!
Personally Henry Jake sounds better than Jake Henry, just saying, but if y'all come up with a middle name for Jake that isnt Henry, please do state it.
The paper is about the feminist fairy tales by Angela Carter, discussing how Carter's recurring setting of secluded places complements the feminist viewpoint she takes on her fairy tales.
The final paragraph is, if it helps at all:
Seclusion does a lot in terms of aiding feminism. It forces one to become self-reliant, as seen in the Countess’s and Alice’s experiences. It helps the woman and man reject the constructed patriarchy of society, just like Beauty, the Beast, the Countess, and her visitor. And last, but certainly not least, it brings you on your path to self discovery. And who knows, perhaps in your own seclusion, you may find a companion, one who will not judge you, will not force you to conform or live up to any expectations, and will accept you for who you truly are.
the magic toyshop by angela carter is on of the best feminist works.i have two days searching about a critic or a study of it but could not find .is there any one who knows something about this
Who is the actress in the Concrete Angel music video who plays Angela Carter (the little girl who the song is about)? She's very talented and cute!
It's not Dakota Fanning.
In the past year I've been to 4 dance conventions. I got classes from Tyce Dioro and Lauren Gotlieb from SYTYCD. I got a class from Nancy O'Meara who coreographed Ashley Tisdale's "He Said, She Said" Geo Hubela who was in the Wedding Singer. And a few other names are Dena Rizzo, Hayley Mac, Tommy Alexander, Barry Youngblood, Angela Carter, Mary Beth Hanson, Jerry Rose, Natilie Kane, and Deryl Retter. The conventions were Showstopper, Dancemakers, co dance, and Dance Caravan. lol I'm just curious if anyone else knows any of these people!
I've sorted out which books i would like to do but really can't think of any books to compare them with.
The magic toyshop- angela carter
our mutual friend- charles dickens
North and south- Elizabeth gaskell
Brighton rock- graham Greene
empire of the sun- jg ballard
Lolita
its a lot to ask but please any recommendations are welcome. if you don't have any for the list above can you recommend any two books that i should read and could do my essay on. Thanks!!!
Thanks for the suggestions but i forgot to say that they can't be a translation!!!
What do you think of the name

One of my favourite writers is Angela Carter, who I think writes superb magic realism - kind of like "fairy tales for adults."
Who are some of your favourites in this genre?
Hafwen x
Rose Macaulay -The World My Wilderness
Margaret Drabble - A Summer Bird Cage
J.G. Farrell - The Siege of Krishnapur
Ian McEwan - Saturday
Kazuo Ishiguro - The Remains of the Day
Muriel Spark - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Graham Greene - Our Man In Havana
Bruce Chatwin - On the Black Hill
Angela Carter - Nights at the Circus
Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead Revisited
Angus Wilson - Anglo-Saxon Attitudes
Authors' names are first. If you know any other good books by any of these authors, then put those too. Thanks.
I'm writing a creative paper for my Gothic literature course and one of the options is to write a gothic fairy tale, because we read Angela Carter's feminist re-writings of classic fairy tales. I decided to do the same thing with Hansel and Gretel. I've renamed them Hunter and Grace, but I'm not sure how to start it off. Angela Carter's stories have a creepy, uncontented-like feel, but I'm not really sure about how to do that with my story. Any tips?
