On the whole, the films of producer-writer-director Arch Oboler seldom came up to the lofty standards of his radio work, but each of his movie projects had a few meritorious moments. One of the better Oboler film efforts was The Arnelo Affair, produced by MGM in 1946. Frances Gifford delivers what may be her best performance as Anne Parkson, the loving but neglected wife of busy Chicago attorney Ted Parkson (George Murphy). Upon meeting one of Ted's clients, shady nightclub owner Tony Arnelo (John Hodiak), Anne finds herself inexorably drawn to the charismatic Arnelo. He in turn is equally fascinated by Anne, but his fascination deepens into love. Upon realizing that Arnelo is essentially a cold-blooded thug, Anne tries to break off their relationship. But Arnelo has murdered his cast-off mistress Claire Lorrison (Joan Woodbury), and has arranged the evidence so as to implicate Anne in the killing. To Arnelo's way of thinking, if he can't have Ann, no one can-certainly not her scrupulously honest husband, who has gone on record insisting that he'd prosecute any criminal to the fullest extent of the law, even if that criminal was a friend or relative. Told in Arch Oboler's traditional stream-of-consciousness manner, the story comes to a violent but logical conclusion when Arnelo exhumes his own long-suppressed sense of decency. Despite competition from the three stars, and from such reliable supporting players as Eve Arden and Dean Stockwell, The Arnelo Affair is stolen by Warner Anderson as a soft-spoken, philosophical Chicago detective. Virginia Opera invites audiences to toast the holidays and fall head-over-heels for Gaetano Donizetti's romantic comedy "The Elixir of Love", coming to the stage in nine romping performances from Nov. 14 through Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax, Va. Last staged here in 1998, "The Elixir of Love" is the classic love potion story, with a comic twist. In the Italian countryside, the young farmer Nemorino drinks a "magical" elixir in the hope it will help him win the love of Adina, the prettiest girl in town. Little does he know the potion, sold to him by a quack doctor, is little more than ordinary red wine. Soprano Jane Redding makes a delightful return to Virginia Opera's stage as Adina, having earned high praise from critics for previous comedic roles here, including Poppea in "Agrippina" (2007) and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro" (2006). Making their company debuts are tenor Joshua Kohl as the love struck farmer Nemorino and baritone Stephen Hartley as the debonair Sergeant Belcore. The cast of five is topped off by returning bass-baritone Todd Robinson as the traveling cure-all salesman, Dr. Dulcamara, and soprano Allison Pohl as Gianetta. Mr. Robinson virtually stole the show with his moving aria as Prince Gremin in "Eugene Onegin" earlier this year, and Ms. Pohl is an exciting talent who last season was a member of the company's Spectrum Resident Artist program for young artists. Returning with a re-envisioned staging of "The Elixir of Love" is acclaimed Broadway stage director and choreographer Dorothy Danner, praised for her previous work at Virginia Opera, including most recently "Lucia di Lammermoor" (2008), "Susannah" and "Carmen" (2006), and "La Traviata" (2005). 0:14 - Casey: "Get a room" Looks like Casey has forgiven Luke for torturing him just for the fun of it. :) In case you've forgotten, Luke forced Casey into pretending to be his boyfriend to throw the immigration officials off. Casey is remarkably happy for someone who just got a divorce (from Emily, who is now sort of back with Dusty). 0:26 - Casey: "I'm guessing your boyfriend" I'll say it again: Oakdale must be the most gay-friendly town in the US for Casey to feel comfortable saying "boyfriend" so loudly. Watch Luke's eyes shift in discomfort and guilt. Love Van's acting 0:49 - Noah: "You've been -- *gulp* -- busy" Watch Noah's huge Adam's Apple. He swallows whenever he's lying or uncomfortable. Poor Noah feels hurt 1:10 - "the grief it's gonna cause you" Rational Noah vs. Passionate Luke! In the past, Luke would have accused Noah of internalized homophobia or being closeted for not taking a public stand. But Noah is clearly no longer closeted since his name is on the film festival's ads 1:21 - Casey: "You should listen to him" Casey is so lovably goofy. For oldtimers: Can you imagine the original actor who played Casey in this role? Billy Magnussen is so much better 2:01 - Luke: "Straight?" Here is Luke again personalizing things, often attributing things to homophobia. I have gay friends like that and it drives me nuts 2:21 - Luke: "because I'm gay" No no no ... that's not what they said. Casey is great to put up with grouchy Luke. :) 2:35 - Casey: "You run with a different wolfpack." This had us laughing. What a weird choice of words. Watch Casey's hands move around as he tries to find those words. And I love Luke's face as he reacts 2:48 - Alison's divorce to Aaron comes just weeks after her sister Emily's divorce to Casey. Aaron and Ali were married for about a week before he found out about her having sex with Chris. Ali is a good person, but incredibly messed up psychosexually. I think Ali and Casey will date 2:58 - Note that Kevin is wearing horizontal stripes, but Luke isn't. There's no point but I thought I'd point it out. :) 3:13 - Kevin: "Good for you" From what I've seen, Kevin seems to have matured and become less of a jerk. His handshake with Noah in the last episode seemed genuine, as it does here 3:25 - "poker game" "Very funny" The guys were making fun of him because Casey has a gambling problem, which resulted in him going to jail 3:50 - Casey: "No freakin' way!" Casey had the same shocked face when Luke asked him to be gay 4:48 - For foriegners: "First lady" is what we call the wife of a president 5:53 - Casey: "I barely even go!" Casey is not exactly an intellectual. He's going to college because his parents forced him to 6:49 - "Her name is Alison Stewart" Although Ali and Nuke have very few scenes together, actress Marnie Schulenberg is supportive of Van. She was one of the few cast members who went to support Van at the opening of his play, Die Mommie Die. In fact, she was the only one who didn't regularly act with him 8:05 - Mark: "Guy...I use the word loosely" You can see Kevin feeling uncomfortable about Mark's homophobic rant. Kevin is clearly not such a bad guy. Too bad Luke doesn't know that. This Mark guy looks like a Republican... ugh 8:25 - Mark: "show gay porn in the quad" Sadly, many homophobes do feel that gay film festivals are full of porn 8:31 - Mark: "What's next?" Kevin is absolutely pissed at Mark. Look at Kevin's eyes staring at him. It's a shame that Luke can't see this. This is great acting by Carl (Kevin) 8:40 - Mark: "Snyder and his Friends of Dorothy" okay, this is either unrealistic or Mark is a closeted homosexual. No straight man would know the term "Friends of Dorothy." Heck, most young gays don't even know it. It's an old euphemism for gay, based on Dorothy of The Wizard of Oz 8:56 - Ali: "the things that were coming out of his mouth" Well, if I'm right that Mark is closeted, one of the things coming out of his mouth will be a penis... 9:05 - Luke: "And Kevin didn't do anything to stop it?" Damn, Luke should have been there. He would be so proud of Kevin. It's weird that Luke would ask this though. Was he expecting Kevin to stop it? 10:03 - Luke: "wanted to beat us up because we were gay" That was a really poorly written scene because there's no proof that the attack was homophobic! The guys wanted Ameera, and there was no way the attackers could have known that Nuke were gay, i.e. they weren't holding hands. The writers could have easily fixed this by having Luke wear a gay t-shirt, etc 10:19 - "I have every right to be in this race" It's tragic that Luke doesn't know that at 9:33, Kevin himself says, "Luke Snyder is a good guy.
