Decided to keep track of what I'm reading. I'm saving New Moon for Christmas break.

this looks like one of those plaques some grannies buy at hallmark that say, life is full of friends, or some nonsense. but this excerpt is wonderful.

...taking a break with a cup of Chai and the book I'm currently reading.
It's a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, called "My Sister, My Love", and it is supposedly based (loosely) on the JonBenet Ramsey murder. It's written in the voice of her older brother, and parts of it are almost in a stream of consciousness style. I just started the book, so I can't really give an opinion yet, but I do have to say that I like Joyce Carol Oate's writing, normally.

This is probably funnier to me than it should be. At the Central Library, I pulled an early critical study of Oates off the shelves. The dust flap copy makes a claim to completeness, referencing "All of her nine novels," a statement that, anytime after the 1970s, is of course a statement of incompleteness. At present, I think, she's written something like three hundred novels, and I suspect she'll write another several dozen by year's end.

I'm bad at the one-book-at-a-time thing.
Who took four English classes this year?
I'll give you a hint - it was me.
So some of those are for school.
There would normally be more library books, as my mother is a librarian (what a stroke of luck).
I just finished One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch earlier today.
my favorites out of the short story book so far are
"Something To Remember Me By" - Saul Bellow
"The Persistence of Desire" - John Updike
"That Evening Sun" - William Faulkner
"The Yellow Wallpaper" - Charlotte Perkins Gilman
"A Death in the Desert" - Willa Cather
AND HOLY FUCKING SHIT "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin

I think that Joyce Carol Oates is naturally this grainy, but the picture probably isn't helping much. Here Oates was talking about something and making wry references about Upstate New York. We didn't stay for much of this talk, but she did seem to be very captivating. I think this was the biggest crowd I saw during the day (hence the difficulty in getting this shot!).

I got these at a local bookstore that is going out of business. I love Joyce Carol Oates' books and Sherlock Holmes!
