"The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clearing, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in the abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace."

August 22, 1904 - Kate Chopin's Death Day Anniversary Annual Book dropoff.

Kate Chopin is my hero. She was revolutionary in the feminist literature movement well before it was deemed acceptable.

Her book, The Awakening, transformed me in ways I’ll never be able to clearly describe. Well over 100 years after it was written, Chopin clearly portrays what it is like to be a woman (not to mention a mother) that is held to certain expectations. This book made me reevaluate my priorities, stay true to my self, and love the woman I am even though I may not fit in to the "mold" that people expect and want.

Every year, on her death day anniversary, I honor her by dropping a copy of The Awakening on her star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame (on Delmar).

It wasn't until after her death that her work became popular and monumental. Somehow...I hope that she knows what she has accomplished. By honoring her on her death day, I believe, I am honoring her entire life. Not the start of it, the middle, or even the end. But the whole thing....which is, quite frankly, still very alive.

This feeds my soul a bit. Being able to honor her...being able to share her literature...being able to send this book on its journey. Today was a good day. After dropping this off, we headed to Calvary Cemetery...visiting her grave site, and then ended with a drive by of her St. Louis residence in the Central West End.

This is my photo for today. 7.365

I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn't give myself. I can't make it more clear; it's only something which I am beginning to comprehend, which is revealing itself to me.

She was seeking herself and finding herself in just such sweet, half-darkness which met her moods. But the voices were not soothing that came to her from the darkness and the sky above and the stars. They jeered and sounded mournful notes without promise, devoid even of hope.

Every year, to honor my favorite author, Kate Chopin...I drop a copy of The Awakening off on her star in the St. Louis Walk of Fame (on the Delmar Loop).

This time, we watched from afar and I was able to catch a photo of the man who took the book. It made my day.

Another book by Kate Chopin...on its journey.

The past was nothing to her; offered no lesson which she was willing to heed. The future was a mystery which she never attempted to penetrate. The present alone was significant...

The water of the Gulf stretched out before her, gleaming with the million lights of the sun. The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander an abysses of solitude. All along the white beach, up and down, there was no living thing in sight. A bird with a broken wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water.

Listed in NR: 04/19/1993
Designated an NHL: 04/19/1993

This Louisiana raised cottage, dating from the late 18th century, was the home of Katherine O’Flaherty Chopin from 1880 to 1883. A nationally significant novelist and short story writer, Chopin utilized the folk culture of the Louisiana bayou country around Coultierville as background for many of her works. Her controversial novel The Awakening was chastised by reviewers because of its subject matter and sensual prose. The house now serves fittingly as the Bayou Folk Museum.

Taking inspiration from "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin.

Have entered this (horribly late) in the Dont Panic poster comp on the theme of feminism, and you can vote for it here! Please do. By all means, it would be much appreciated.

Threshold Lines

Do like the slender nature of the lines here, especially on the figure and such (makes me feel like Aubrey Beardsley!) but I didn't think it would work for this picture. Looking back I almost wonder if I made a mistake, I shall clearly have to draw something that demands such appealingly clean, sharp lines!
