Marko X [lew welch before disappearing into the mountains with his .22]

track number 14 from the CD 'reveries of an isolated man' Lew Welch was born August 16 Wanting to get back to poetry, Welch applied for a transfer to Montgomery Ward's Oakland headquarters, and started to get involved in the San Francisco literary scene. He soon gave up advertising and earned a living driving a yellow cab while devoting more of his time to writing. He became an active participant in Beat culture, living at various times with Snyder and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and appearing as the character Dave Wain in Jack Kerouac's novel Big Sur. He had a common-law relationship with Polish refugee Magda Cregg, and became, essentially, the stepfather of Hugh Anthony Cregg, III who later chose the stage-name Huey Lewis in honor of Welch. Welch left a suicide note and disappeared into the mountains of California in 1971. His body was never found.

Television, the Drug of the Nation was released as a single. It was recorded previously by Michael Franti's first band, the Beatnigs. The Disposable Heroes' solitary album represents much more than Franti's fiercely intelligent narratives. Where hyperbole, bombast and finger-pointing had been the order of the day in hip-hop, Franti includes his own inadequacies in his diagnosis of the problem. The Disposable Heroes recall Public Enemy both in their aural assault and in the rhetorical dexterity of rapper Michael Franti...A blistering, state-of-the-art album about the state of the soul of contemporary American society. Franti's soft-spoken condemnations are pitted against a series of deceptively seductive tunes. Franti's smooth poetry sounds more like that of Lawrence Ferlinghetti than the hip-hop which later came to dominate. Village Voice (3/2/93) - Ranked #19 list of the 40 Best Albums Of 1992. The dance is presented as a salute to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, most famous for his work with Shirley Temple. Presumably the studio wanted a blackface number, and Robinson at the time was box office success. Special thanks to U.M.G. for letting me keep this post up.

I am Waiting - Ferlinghetti

This poem is definitely a product of its time so there's a lot of talk about Elvis and Ike and segregation, but I think that hoping and waiting for the right time for all your people to be free and happy is never a bad idea. Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "I Am Waiting" I am waiting for my case to come up and I am waiting for a rebirth of wonder and I am waiting for someone to really discover America and wail and I am waiting for the discovery of a new symbolic western frontier and I am waiting for the American Eagle to really spread its wings and straighten up and fly right and I am waiting for the Age of Anxiety to drop dead and I am waiting for the war to be fought which will make the world safe for anarchy and I am waiting for the final withering away of all governments and I am perpetually awaiting a rebirth of wonder I am waiting for the Second Coming and I am waiting for a religious revival to sweep thru the state of Arizona and I am waiting for the Grapes of Wrath to be stored and I am waiting for them to prove that God is really American and I am seriously waiting for Billy Graham and Elvis Presley to exchange roles seriously and I am waiting to see God on television piped onto church altars if only they can find the right channel to tune in on and I am waiting for the Last Supper to be served again with a strange new appetizer and I am perpetually awaiting a rebirth of wonder I am waiting for my number to be called and I am waiting for the living end and I am waiting for dad to come home his pockets full of irradiated silver dollars and I am waiting for the atomic tests to end and I am waiting happily for things to get much worse before they improve and I am waiting for the Salvation Army to take over and I am waiting for the human crowd to wander off a cliff somewhere clutching its atomic umbrella and I am waiting for Ike to act and I am waiting for the meek to be blessed and inherit the earth without taxes and I am waiting for forests and animals to reclaim the earth as theirs and I am waiting for a way to be devised to destroy all nationalisms without killing anybody and I am waiting for linnets and planets to fall like rain and I am waiting for lovers and weepers to lie down together again in a new rebirth of wonder I am waiting for the Great Divide to be crossed and I am anxiously waiting for the secret of eternal life to be discovered by an obscure general practitioner and save me forever from certain death and I am waiting for life to begin and I am waiting for the storms of life, to be over and I am waiting to set sail for happiness and I am waiting for a reconstructed Mayflower to reach America with its picture story and tv rights sold in advance to the natives and I am waiting for the lost music to sound again in the Lost Continent in a new rebirth of wonder I am waiting for the day that maketh all things clear and I am waiting for Ole Man River to just stop rolling along past the country club and I am waiting for the deepest South to just stop Reconstructing itself in its own image and I am waiting for a sweet desegregated chariot to swing low and carry me back to Ole Virginie and I am waiting for Ole Virginie to discover just why Darkies are born and I am waiting for God to lookout from Lookout Mountain and see the Ode to the Confederate Dead as a real farce and I am awaiting retribution for what America did to Tom Sawyer and I am perpetually awaiting a rebirth of wonder I am waiting for Tom Swift to grow up and I am waiting for the American Boy to take off Beauty's clothes and get on top of her and I am waiting for Alice in Wonderland to retransmit to me her total dream of innocence and I am waiting for Childe Roland to come to the final darkest tower and I am waiting for Aphrodite to grow live arms at a final disarmament conference in a new rebirth of wonder I am waiting to get some intimations of immortality by recollecting my early childhood and I am waiting for the green mornings to come again youth's dumb green fields come back again and I am waiting for some strains of unpremeditated art to shake my typewriter and I am waiting to write the great indelible poem and I am waiting for the last long careless rapture and I am perpetually waiting for the fleeing lovers on the Grecian Urn to catch each other up at last and embrace and I am awaiting perpetually and forever a renaissance of wonder

Dickens 44 - The Discovery of A Forgotten Beat Artist

Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Crumb. These are just a few of the creative icons that personify the Beat Generation of the 50s and 60s. They spawned a movement that continues to this day to capture our imaginations. Dickens 44 was an active member of the club who bridges the gap between the Beatniks and the Hippies. He opened the Free Store and was a founding member of the now famous antiestablishment Unknown Museum in the early 70s before he disappeared. 25 years later he is still making art with a passion. He calls it "Art for everyone to enjoy".

Savage On WB Yeates & Pol Pot

A Socialist Book Store Owner Compared to Pol Pot. The Second Coming, 1921, by William Butler Yeats (Poem)- Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? ________________ Wiki On WB Yeats http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Butler_Yeats ________________ Wiki On The Poem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_Coming_(poem) Interesting info on his philosophy (Gyre) ______________________________
