Off the top of my head I would go with (and in no particular order):
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
Satisfaction - Devo (The Rolling Stones)
Turn the Page - Metalllica (Bob Seger)
(honorable mention to Fairport Convention for 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen, but who remembers that anyway?)
Oh I forgot to mention Marilyn Manson's cover of the Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams' (way more creepy and thus more relevant to the lyrical content)
Hey, I'm a Zappa fan and a Zeppelin fan and I never knew that he did a cover of Stairway - cool. (that makes the question alone)
and which one Person would you include, and who would you drop from the list to accommodate them?
By Solo Artists, I mean those who are best known in their own name, rather than with others they may have recorded with.
Bob Dylan
Rory Gallagher
Van Morrison
SRV (yes, I know about Double Trouble)
Neil Young
Leonard Cohen
Eva Cassidy
Lou Reed
John Lennon (much preferred his Solo stuff)
Joan Armatrading
Thanks.
Ron- can't include Jimi in every single post I make :-).
I have chosen this song to write a critical analysis essay about... I was wondering if any body has any info about the song (lyrically, melodically, harmonically etc...) that they would like to share?
I have a dance to his song and i know the lyrics, but can't find the singer, it keeps coming up as John Legend, Leonard Cohen, and concrete blonde, but none of them are it, here are the lyrics
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
The woman who lives above me, wails and sobs sometimes, and others she is screaming her damn head off. Let's not forget when she breaks out her guitar and sings Leonard Cohen's "hallelujah" ten times in a row. She's killing me.
What is the song Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen about ? Is it a religious song ? A mockery of religion ? I really love the song, but can't figure it out. Thanks for any help.
No? why not? give me your opinion about what you think, what it represents for you all. I ask about the christian stuff 'cause a christian artist made a cover of it.
I'm up for suggestions. Though I'm putting this in the R&P section, any kind of recommendations...country, jazz, celtic folk...anything, would be great. So you have an idea of what I like, here are some of my favorite artists. But, please try and be obscure...I have thousands of albums. Thank you very much : )
Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Waylon Jennings, Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Band, Buddy Guy, Grateful Dead, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Billie Holiday, T. Rex, the Sonics, Pink Floyd, Warren Zevon, 13th Floor Elevators, Alice In Chains, Talking Heads, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Black Crowes, William Elliott Whitmore, the Allman Brothers Band, Gram Parsons, Grant Lee Buffalo, Emmylou Harris, Hoodoo Gurus, Dr. Hook, Jethro Tull, Billy Joe Shaver, Janis Joplin, Iggy Pop, The Kinks, the Velvet Underground, Kris Kristofferson, Bert Jansch, Robert Johnson, Fairport Convention, Brian Eno, Elton John, Chuck Berry, Tim Buckley, the Replacements, Beulah, Wishbone Ash, the Who, Van Morrison, Townes Van Zandt, Love and Rockets, Iron Maiden, Frank Zappa, Sam Bush, Muddy Waters, John Lennon, Otis Redding, the Pogues, Howlin' Wolf, Nick Drake, Lucinda Williams, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jackie Greene, Elvis Costello, Drive-By Truckers, Captain Beefheart, John Prine, Gene Clark, the Wildhearts, Galaxie 500, etc...
IMPORTANT! By pop music I just mean popular music as a whole. Anything that could ever be played on mainstream radio, let's say. Not just music with synthesizers instead of loud guitars. This isn't a forum for you to rant about how much you hate Lady GaGa, and how dumb the whole disco stick metaphor is.
Anyway, it seems to me that because pop has lyrics, a lot of people tend to ignore the music, beyond the most basic rhythm. Very little depresses me more than people saying that they like rock music because it has more meaning that rap. It seems like good music should have meaning in the music. Lyrics in pop seems to give some listeners the impression that the pop song is an inherently deep medium, and it takes some intelligence or skill to deal with. That just adds to the elitist mind set of classic rock reactionaries and their ilk.
I'm also sick of having to defend rap by saying that most lyrics are not just gangsta caricatures. Because even if that were the case, the genre could be great. Great production and rapping, even if the lyrics are not about anything particularly deep, can make for a good song.
And circling back to that first point, it bothers me when people treat lyrical artists like Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen as made by their lyrics. Both of them are great songwriters, too. They play simple music for the most part, but it's all musically sound. If one of them was just singing nonsense symbols, their music would still be great.
And that's the end of it. I'm usually not too big on unprovoked rant questions, but I'm in the mood today. I guess I want to know if you agree, or have more thoughts on the matter.
BQ: Have you listened to synthy Cohen, like I'm Your Man? What do you think of it?
BQ2: Do you find it odd that Yahoo! recognizes "gangsta" as a word, but not "Obama"?
1.Bob Dylan
2.Leonard Cohen
3.Jim Morrison
4.Kurt Cobain
5.Syd Barrett
6.John Lennon
7.Tupac Shakur (Changes + Keep Ya Head Up alone earn him a spot on this list)
8.Neil Young
9.Lou Reed
10.Cat Stevens
I'm missing loads I know, but if it was the top 100 they would all be included.
Yours?
btw, my "my ten favorite lyricists" differs greatly from this list. These are just people I appreciate to be the greatest.
A current sample of the playlist I'm building is
Ziggy Stardust- David Bowie
Touched- V.A.S.T
Suzanne- Leonard Cohen
Animal Nitrate- Suede
Crystalised- The XX
Sometimes- And One
Basically songs that are quiet and laid back, with shades of sadness. I'm finding it difficult to think of any at the moment since I'm more naturally a rock/metal person. NO country music please.
All suggestions welcome :) Also the tunes mentioned above are well worth listening to

Hi,
Male vocalist in the Gordon Haskell/Leonard Cohen style singing a song which I think is called "So Long". Anybody have any ideas who this artist might be?
Thanks.
OK - so, in English, I have to find a song that is well written. I'm searching for something with layers... let's say, on paper it can read like a poem, but is taken to a different level when music is added. If it has a music video, that may even create more meaning to it. I was thinking of a song like Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, but that's already taken. Since I'm comparing the lyrics to a simple poem, I really need something substantial.
Please bear in mind that since I'll be playing the song in front of the class, I won't be caught dead playing a Madonna song. I'm looking for something more like Mad World or Here Without You.

"But the name Cohen is reserved for the priestly caste descended directly from the biblical Aaron. Cohens are accorded certain privileges in the Jewish religion and are subject to certain restrictions: They’re not allowed to marry a widow, a divorcee, or a non-Jew, for instance, which has kept the Cohen bloodline exceptionally pure.
There’s even a Kohen gene, identified as a marker on the Y chromosome shared by over 90 percent of Kohanim and about 5 percent of all Jewish males. Not to mention the positioning of the kohen’s hands during a priestly blessing, adopted as Mr. Spock’s Vulcan salute by Leonard Nimoy, who was raised an Orthodox Jew.
What’s especially ironic, and to some galling, about the rising popularity of Cohen as a first name is that the people who love it seem to be just about as un-Jewish as you can get. Google “Cohen is my favorite name” and you’ll find family pictures featuring toy guns and rebel flags. On being assured on one name board that using the name Cohen would not necessarily offend Jews, one mom-to-be wrote, 'That's great to hear!! We live in a small town in the Midwest and I've never met a Jewish person IRL.' "
Read the article. Do you still think it's fitting for a child's first name?
For one, I think Leonard Cohen is a respectable first, but more recent songwriters I'd go..
(Not necessarily in this particular order)
Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel)
Jesse Lacey (Brand New)
Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra/Right Away, Great Captain!)
Aaron Weiss (mewithoutyou)
And, I'm not counting people that sell their songs to Nashville executives.
What do you think?
i need new music. I listen to everything but i am looking for different/ inspirationalmusic.
Music i have now
Miley Cyrus-The climb
Cesaria Evora-Sodade
Ali farka toure- Ai Du
Radiohead- Lucky
I also listen to classical music and opera
I like Moonlight Sonata and Nessum Dorma
I like Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Leonard Cohen. Basically i don't have a type of music, i like plaintive, wronged love music. I am willing to listen to anything if it speaks to me.
...with Your favorite songs that sum up who you are/what you believe in/something that is special to you, what would you put in it and who would you give it to?
I saw a question similar to this and thought i might ask you guys :)
Here is my answer (songs in no particular order):
1. Suzanne by Leonard Cohen
2. The stranger song by Leonard Cohen
3. Anthems for a 17 year old girl by broken social scene
4. werewolf by cocorosie
5. Christine by house of love
6. Song for Jo by Scarlett Johansson
7. House where nobody lives by tom waits

10.into dust by mazzy star
11. fade into you by mazzy star
12.Blanchard by Hope Sandoval & the warm inventions
I have many many more songs but i think this particular list makes up a certain feeling or a way of life like no other, for me at least. I would give it to whomever my soul mate might be.
I forgot to add that these songs contain some of my favorite lyrics. That's another reason why :)
So I am trying to put together a number of songs for a CD I am doing but am not sure where to look or which ones to choose.
I really like the version of halleluja- featured in shrek- not so much the original that Leonard Cohen wrote.
If you know any songs that are similar to this song could you give me thier name and where to find them, and also where to find the sheet music or guitar chords if possible.
Any help will be much obliged and if I get this album out I will send the best answerer a free copy as well as rating the best answer as the answer that has the most songs and the most detail.
Thankyou very much for any help given at all :):):)
i was watching so you think you can dance seanson 6 episode 6 and this girl danced to this song and i looked up the lyrics and it says a guy sings it. its the same lyrics just different signer. it sounds like regina spektor but im not forsure. please help :/
Last night (Wednesday) on So You Think You Can Dance, they had a montage to a cover of Leonard Cohen's song "Everybody Knows." Does anyone know who sings this cover? It was a woman singing a pretty slow version.
“You who must leave everything that you cannot control: it starts with your family, but soon it comes round to your soul. I’ve been where you’re hanging, I think I can see how you’re pinned; If you’re not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.”
–Leonard Cohen
Okay, so I heard it on SYTYCD Season 6, and I caught onto some of the lyrics:
"Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed, that's how..."
And that's how far I got. It's sung by a GIRL by the way, NOT Leonard Cohen, and I know at the end, the phrase, "Everybody knows," repeats about 20 times till it fades out. Any help please?!?
I must be hard to please, or not looking hard enough, i usually listen to bruce springsteen, leonard cohen, bob dylan, van morrison, foo fighters, QOTSA, kings of leon.
but i cant any new bands even half as good as those guys i listed : (

Bob Dylan,
Crosby, Stills and Nash
Bruce Springsteen
The Byrds

Hopefully you all get the idea! I myself am only 19 and none of my friends have similar music preferences (They're all into this pop punk and metal thats going around these days!)
PLEASE TAKE MY MUSICAL PREFRENCE INTO CONSIDERATION, I asked before but got reccomended exactly the kind of music I'm talking about above!
Thanks guys! Just started using this but rest assured, I'll be looking round to see if theres anything I can answer :)
Cheers!

These are my real questions:
(1) Are there anyone of them famous in writing love song or write a lot of love song?
(2) Can you tell me a brief about him/ her? e.g. what kind of style is their songs
(3) Most popular song from that songwriter?
Thanks :)
Leonard Cohen was born on September 21, 1934.He is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963. His work often deals with the exploration of religion, isolation, sexuality and complex interpersonal relationships.

Famously reclusive, spending years in a Zen Buddhist monastery, and possessing a persona frequently associated with mystique, he is extremely well-regarded by critics for his literary accomplishments and for producing an output of work of high artistic quality over a five-decade career.

If it be your will
I believe him to be a word class songwriter, but don't take my word for it. While giving the speech at his induction into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters".
His most covered and popular song is certainly Hallelujah

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
So R&P, join me in wishing Mr. Cohen a happy 75th birthday, and share a favorite performance or cover of one of his songs!
Liking Johnny's version better?
Yes this does belong in R and S. Rock and Roll is my religion and my god. Won't ever change, maybe I'm strange.

The phrase "true religion" is the ultimate paradox.

smashing pumpkins
paparoach
metallica
red hot chili peppers
guns and roses
my chemical romance
the used
mostly anything remotely mainstream, top 40 etc...
I love sad songs, I love depressing music, I love beautiful music, a specific song does not necessarily have to be sad and beautiful, so if you think you have something to share with me please do, it will be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.
i have heard the smiths, the cure and bright eyes before thanks anyway, i like at least one song by these artists, but i prefer other things, thanks anyway.
thanks to the 2nd person to comment also but yeah this type of music is not what i am into, i might check out one or two songs i haven't heard from this list though, but i probably wont be into it. thanks anyway.
I have decided to combine my two favorite YA! categories and ask this question.
What songs can you think of that are actual poetry also?
Lou Reed's 'The raven' comes to mind.
And of course, being a Novalis fan, I know that just about everything they have recorded comes from the German poet Novalis.
I've also always felt that Leonard Cohen's 'Bird on a wire' would be good read as a poem. Also, I remember studying 'I am a rock' Simon and Garfunkle as a poem in school.
Give me some others. I am curious.
MQ: Songs that are 'poetry' or from poetry.
BQ: Favorite poem song?
BQ2: Song that you think could/should also be a poem, and why?
Can someone provide me with a link to where I can buy an audio recording of Bon Jovi singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"? NO LINKS TO DVD'S PLEASE!!! AUDIO ONLY!!!
