I'm quite enjoying watching "An Englishman In New York" on LOGO right now (John Hurt is wonderful!), and I'm curious as to your opinion- is the archetype of the witty gay man dead and gone for good? The sophisticated, dandy sort of fellows who were so elegant and charming with a quick turn of phrase, intelligent and cultured and very nearly channeling Oscar Wilde?
Has their breed gone extinct? What do you think?
Aw, you suck.
I'm looking for a site I use very often, but I can't find it right now and I'm very upset. The title at the top of the screen was Dark Quotes. It wasn't the main page of the site though.
The site was black with white writing and had the following quotes on it:
Blood is thicker than water, and much tastier.
"Do not ask which creature screams in the night, Do not question who waits for you in the shadow. It is my cry that wakes you in the night, And my body that crouches in the shadow. I am Tzeench and you are the puppet That dances to my tune."
~Karanzantor the Vile, The Traitor of Xian
"Only love will make your cold heart melt"
"Another day nearer the battle,
So drink up my lads and look brave,
'Cos every day nearer the battle
Is another day nearer the grave."
~A warriors' song of the Imperial Guard
"That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die."
-H.P. Lovecraft
"The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass leaving memories that become legend, then fade to myth, and are long forgotten when that age comes again."
~Robert Jordan, "The Wheel of Time"
"Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it."
~Reaper Man, Terry Pratchett
We make the dragons as we make the gods, because we need them, because somewere deep in our hearts, we recognize that a world without them is a world not living in. No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world wihtout magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith.
"Not all who wander are lost"
~J.R.R. Tolkien
"The greatest harm can result from the best intentions."
~Stone of Tears
Without order nothing can exist - without chaos nothing can evolve.
The world needs more Heroes.
"I stayed up all night playing poker with tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died."
~Steven Wright
Remember youth as you pass by,
As you was once, so once was I,
As I am now, you soon will be,
Prepare to die and follow me.
~Epitaph on a warlock grave
Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and *****-slap the motherfucker upside the head...
Many people say that man is not affected by the pull of the moon. Scientists say that if that is true, then humans are the *only* thing on earth that isn't...
Always remember this: If you don't attend the funerals of your friends, they will certainly not attend yours.
Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they ticked me off.
All that we see or seem, Is but a dream within a dream.
-Edgar Allan Poe
"I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark burn out in a brilliant blaze than it be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet."
-Jack London
You have to have a darkness...for the dawn to come.
Nothing makes us so lonely as our secrets.
"Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be."
-Fannie Brice
"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars."
-Oscar Wilde
The lips which will be markedly full and red are drawn back from the teeth which gleam long, sharp as razors, and ivory white.
-Montague Summers, The Vampire, His Kith and Kind (1928)
Vampires provided a perfect mirror of the worst fears of the pious and perfect. Vampires were dangerous, sexually rampant, enormously powerful, absolutely unconcerned about human dignity and preservation of the soul, and finally...dead. And it was this last aspect of their nature that made them the most fascinating to legend-makers.
-Dunn Mascetti, Manuela. Vampires: The Complete Guide to the World of the Undead
"We've trivialized the vampire. I think it happened about the time 'Count Chocula' found its way to cereal boxes."
-F. Paul Wilson, author 'Midnight Mass' a vampire novella
"How typical of humans... Your eyes are clouded so you cannot see...... Even though the truth is always within you..."
- Vampire Princess Miyu
"I am powerful, I am immortal, I can do anything, I am cursed, I am the Darkness"
-Jackie Estacado.
"First defense against evil - Open your damn eyes."
-Reese, Forever Knights
"No one holds command over me.
No man. No god. No prince.
What is a claim of age for ones who are immortal?
What is a claim of power for ones who defy death?
Call your damnable hunt.
We shall see who I drag screaming to hell with me."
-Gunter Dorn, Das Ungeheuer Darin. Vampire the Masquerade 2nd Edition Book

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth."
I'm wondering what the context of this quote is -- was it from a book of Wilde's, a letter ..?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Do you agree or disagree?

Hey. I am fifteen and next summer will be directing for the second time with my friends. This past summer we performed The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and it was a HUGE success(We got told it was better than any production they had seen of it), and we are excited to bring our theatre loving community something even more exciting next summer. The actors we have are extremely versatile so comedy or drama or whatever. We would also like an established play that will draw audiences. Nothing inappropriate(We are prep students.lol) Straight plays ONLY! We would prefer a full length but you can suggest one acts. Also, we like period pieces because we get really into the period(We researched the period like crazy and borrowed this really old antique furniture for Earnest and made our costumes from scratch) Anyway, please and thank you!
No musicals please! We don't have any band or the facility. We have a superb church that is great for straight plays(Great sound, stage, lights) but will not work for a musical. Plus, it's student run!
Oh, and we do not want to do Shakespeare!
My favorite Quote about Death is.
Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brow earth, with the grasses waving above ones head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.-Oscar Wilde, writer.(1854-1900)
Karl Marx, who famously described religion as “the opium of the people”, has joined Galileo, Charles Darwin and Oscar Wilde on a growing list of historical figures to have undergone an unlikely reappraisal by the Roman Catholic Church.
L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, said yesterday that Marx’s early critiques of capitalism had highlighted the “social alienation” felt by the “large part of humanity” that remained excluded, even now, from economic and political decision-making.
Georg Sans, a German-born professor of the history of contemporary philosophy at the pontifical Gregorian University, wrote in an article that Marx’s work remained especially relevant today as mankind was seeking “a new harmony” between its needs and the natural environment. He also said that Marx’s theories may help to explain the enduring issue of income inequality within capitalist societies.

OH. MY. GOD. Who put these latte-sipping liberal socialists in the Vatican anyway? FACT.
Ive always loved Oscar Wilde with a passion and its been a dream to have a first edition. I cant find one and ive been wondering where to find one and how much roughly I would pay.
Thanks.
"The only artists I have ever known who are personally delightful are bad artists. Good artists exist simply in what they make, and consequently are perfectly uninteresting in what they are," (Wilde 55). What is the significance to this quote in relation to the idea that Lord Henry didn't care much for art.
Can be more than one. Tell why if you can.

I have already read the novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and now i have to choose the second novel that i'm going to read. The novel has to be prior to 1900, and I have to write a comparison essay between the two novels.
My first choice is "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" becasue the share the same theme of living a double life and the idea of moral choice.
However i was suggested "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad and also "The importance of Being Ernest" also by Oscar Wilde. Between which of these novels, do you think would create the best/easiest comparison essay. If there are any other books that are prior to 1900 that you know of, that share the same general ideas/themes as to dorian gray that can create a good comparison novel that would be great, thanks for any help.
1. Gustave Mahler was persuaded by Sigmund Freud to listen to his wife's music.
True or False?
2. Oscar Wilde was found not guilty after a judge ruled that an artist's private life was not the public's business.
True or False?
3. In order to have his novel Native Son made into a film by MGM, Richard Wright had to agree to allow white actors to play all the parts. He refused their request.
True or False?
4. In A Room of One's Own, the author contrasts facilities offered to men and women at Harvard.
True or False?
5. The composer Gustave Mahler told his wife that her role in life was to nurse the children, prepare meals, and copy all of his manuscripts in her spare time.
True or False?
Are there still people around who read 'old' books like Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde? Do you think there is a market for this genre? How do you think one would make contact with this market?
I tell you that there are terrible temptations which it requires strength, strength and courage to yield to. ~Oscar Wilde
Agree?
BQ: Last temptation you yielded too?
-I ran out of figures in the title.
Books like Twilight (good movie, loved it, but bad books), Gossip Girl (good show, horrendous in not only writing and composition but also grammar, despicable), and The Clique series ~shudder~ (enough said) are not well written. Have you detected the very obvious fact that the authors of young adult novels are lacking in the creativity of her word choice. Of all the synonyms in the world that she could possibly use to replace beautiful when describing the vampires, other than repeatedly using "beautiful" in every other sentence, Ms. Meyer decides that she would rather use "beautiful" IN EVERY OTHER SENTENCE. What is happening to the world of literature? Did you know that over a third of all books sold are these...things? Suffice it to say even Alice in Wonderland, which btw was written while Lewis Carrol was on hallucinogenics, greatly surpasses today's pathetic attempts at writing, in both content and form. I mean, come on, what is the theme in The It Girl? Not everyone who reads Writing for Dummies can write. Writers like Toni Morrison, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Salman Rushdie, Langston Hughes (poet), John Steinbeck, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar Wilde and many others have written books with meaning, life, themes, and ACTUAL WORDS! I'm not talking about children's books, those are written by some of the best authors.
Now, I realize that I will get a mob of angry messages saying, "Like OMG, Twilight is like the best, f u beeyatch." To which I would respond, "Well thank you, perfect stereotype of the bimbo-American teenager (I'm American too); you've just illustrated my point. Now try to find Asia on a map, so we can all have a good laugh! Why do you think that Americans have a reputation of being stupid? But in Twilight's defense My Super Sweet Sixteen and Miss Teen South Carolina did contribute to this epidemic of just out-right stupid. There's no sophisticated word for it, it's just plain stupid. I'm saying this, not because I want to criticize or insult, but because it had to be said. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but Twilight is NOT literature. I bet half of all Twilight fans didn't even know who half of those authors were/are (without looking them up), much less what they even wrote. I don't know, it's kind of sad.
I'm tired, it's late, I'm not wearing my contacts (so I'm all hunched over), and I don't have time to grammar-check this question, sorry for the inconvenience? I know it's long. Think of it as an article.
me and my bff are doing the tea party scene in the importance of being earnest for out drama but my other two friends need one and i'm trying to find one of his as he is irish and we have to use irish playwrights work. Any suggestions?
2 hours ago - 4 days left to answer.
I need to write a ps for a 6th form, let me know if I should change anything...
My name is ********, and I am currently a year 11 student at ***********in *********.
I consider myself a suitable student for your 6th form because; I uphold all of the values that I feel you would appreciate. For example, I believe that respect and self- determination are two qualities that will get you far in life. I say this because as deputy head girl of my school, I have seen instances where these attributes have helped.
I would say my confidents and honesty are my biggest strengths, and these were reasons I was made deputy head girl. However, my biggest weakness would probably be my in efficiency to carry out certain plans. E.g, sometimes I procrastinate about certain things, but end up not doing them, or doing them after I said I would. I am trying successfully to counter this by doing whatever I say I am going to do immediately.
I am an avid reader and thoroughly enjoy reading the classics, and other advanced novels. My favourite modern classic is ‘Emma’ by Jane Austen, however I would say my favourite text would be ‘The importance of being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde.
I am also a dedicated singer, and sing in a band (in which I also play the guitar) and my school choir.
I have decided that I would like to study at ********6th form, because it offers all the courses I would like to do. In addition, I like the schools environment and ethoses, as I believe that when you work hard, things will becomes easier for you; however, everything must be done in a balance.
I am hoping to study Psychology, English language, Math’s and Biology. This is because in the future, I plan to be psychotherapist, and I feel that these subjects will benefit me the most. My dream is to go on to higher education and study at Cambridge University.
Im studying The importance of being Earnest in English and part of our homework is to find out about how he was an important part of the decadence movement. Ive googled it but everything's too long and generally irrelevant.
So yeah uhh please answer this and help me? :)
I have to do a presentation about Oscar Wilde and I really want it to be interesting and include unknown, weird or funny facts about him and make the class to want to know more about him.
I need a book that's considered a "classic" (like something by Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, etc.) that's main theme is about loneliness or solitude or reclusion, anything along those lines. Can anyone name a few titles, please?
