Okay, so I'm 14, and have a 13 yr old sister, and I want to be able to see her again, for like a last time, as I'm currently suffering from FFI (Fatal Familial Insomnia) and so as you can probably guess, will not last so long, we're on summer holidays at the minute, but I won't be going back to school, I cant see her as her folks hate me (we're both adopted, by different people, and they don't know that we r sisters), but I need to see her, I promised her that we will c each other again before either of us die, promised her that about a week ago, but I don't know how,
inner detail to the plan - Poppy Z. Brite's book, 'Exquisite Corpse' - the man at the beginning, Andrew Compton, brings himself in 2 a state where he isn't alive or dead, he is between consciousness, stops breathing, and stops his heart beating, but can still come back, - apparently lots of Hindu, G_ds, I think, have done the same, and lived fine, after months of being buried,
my plan is : to try and do the same, but I need a guarantee that I will be able to come back, to see my sister, then I can go, and I wont care,
is there any way? - is it possible? - are there any ways to do it, like easy ways? - do you think her folks will let her see me there?
(if this should be in a different section, please let me know which)
thanks in advance!!
(Additional Details)
okay, gotta get this bit clear, we are half sisters, I'm illegally adopted from Australia (currently residing in the UK) she was legally adopted and her first birth certificate does not have a fathers name on it, but we have managed to contact family members and have worked out 100% that we are sisters, but the government does not know this, its impossible, so the folks will not believe it, no adults will, (adults we know that is)
and this will not be healed by prayer, i believe in G_d, and have been religious all my life, but i have been flown to a different part of the world, to have specialists check everything and they have told me that I have less than 3 weeks to live, there's no other possible way,
(except what one smart-*** said, which is slightly likely, which is to be frozen, and unfrozen when there's a cure, but that will b ages away, and if my sister isn't here, I frankly wouldn't want to be here as it is, I only want to be able to say goodbye to her)
so on wer i asked the q b4,
they suggested i put this on ere
so im asking about the consciousness thing
is it possible?
do u believe it 2 b possible?
do u know how?
- iv attempted and ended up in hospital
id stopped breathing
but nt heartbeat
and and didnt no how 2 get back on my own...
wait they said religion and beliefs...
but i cant find that...
Im going on holiday in 2 weeks for 2 weeks in cyprus and i was wondering what would be a good book to take with me?
I do not like Stephanie Meyers books.
I like Poppy Z Brite's books.
I like books about romance and homosexual relationships.
My favorite book was Memoirs of geisha.
Help please?
There seems to be an "anti twilight" backlash going on in popular fiction right now.
Twilight has been relegated to Teen Girl fantasy.
My question is,do you feel other Vampire authors such as Anne Rice, And Poppy Z Brite have been affected by the anti twilight crowd?
Or in an odd way do you feel Twilight helped Vampire fiction?
It seems as though I have read everything. Do you know a good website with a list of horror/torture/serial killer authors? Do you know an author who writes about the very odd and grisly? I'm a fan of Poppy Z Brite, Stephen King, Anne Rice and all the other popular horror writers. Do you know anyone obscure? I'd love to discover some new talent.
They are very close friends in "Lost Souls"; their relationship has homoerotic overtones; and I've heard they get sexual in a short story "Staying Awake" that is almost impossible to find.
I'm 14. I read things like Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Poppy Z. Brite books, Scott Westerfield books, and Harry Potter, but I'm not looking for kids books. I've read Twilight, but I didn't like it.
I like books with a Supernatural element to them, like angels and demons (but nothing religious) or vampires. Nothing 'scary' though, because while I'm obsessed with anything horror movie related- I'm not much for horror books.
And I can read at an adult level, so more 'mature' recommendations are fine ^-^
I said I read Twilight and I didn't like it. I read it a while ago (2 years ago) and I DON'T like all the attention its getting. People really only like it because Edwards so mysterious and 'hott' and vampirey, but what the fuck. HONESTLY, theres much better vampire stuff out there.
Like Buffy and Angel and even TRUE BLOOD is better than Twilight and I HATE TRUEBLOOD.
I'm shopping on amazon to find some books for my husband. I'm having trouble finding good books. I was wondering if anyone has read any horror books that they couldn't put down? He enjoys Ed lee, Poppy Z. Brite and Jack Ketchum and various zombie books. Are there any other horror/zombie books that have the same writing styles as these authors?
I'm a big fan of Poppy Z. Brite's horror novels but now that I've read them I'm dying for more! Do you know of anything similar? It doesn't seem like anyone I've tried can compare, Poppy is just too different! I really like that her characters are gay too. Any suggestions?
(I have already read Twilight and it is NOT similar to Poppy Z. Brite's work please do not recommend it!)
I'm a huge fan of Poppy Z Brites work and two of my favorite books from her are from the Dell Abyss imprint "a line of sophisticated, psychological horror novels"
Apparently the line of books was short lived back in the.. 80s i believe.
Stephen king talked highly of the Abyss and me loving the books by poppy has made me want to find more books from the line.
But i can't seem to find very much info on them, at all.
I really want a list of books by them.
If you know any books by abyss, a site where i might find them or any authors similar to Poppy z Brite, please share :]
My favorite vampire books are Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I also like Poppy Z, Brite's Lost Souls. So any books that are similar to these books would be good.
(Please don't recommend me Twilight. I read them and hated them. So don't recommend me any books that are like Twilight. Actually don't recommend me any vampire books from the teen section, unless you think I would really like it. Other than that, I don't like teen vampire romance novels.)
If it has romance in it? I would prefer homosexual romance. I don't know why, but they're kind of sad and funny to read. If not, I like the love you hate you kind of romance.
spoil me please! I'm looking for a cool novel to read. I'm looking forward to have this one but not sure it's worth to pay for or not(as in this country they never import the book, so it'll cost me quite a lot to buy it online) What's it about? How is it? How it ends?
I really like awfully gory books... I read Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite and love that kind of style.
Anything scary or gory would be great.
Any recommendations?
She is into authors like Neil Gaiman, J.K Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, Poppy Z. Brite's "Lost Souls" and whoever the author of "Doom knee deep in the dead" is. If you know of any authors of books like what are listed above please tell me, I want to get her some new reading material, she recently fell back into a steady reading habit and this is one that I like so I'd like to keep this one up.
I forgot to mention this and sorry to those who mentioned it.. But she didn't like twilight. She read it and said that she regreted having picked it up in the first place. Something that's not typically a young readers book. Something that yourself would read. Yes harry potter is young readers and Neil Gaiman is, but they both appeal to adults because of the story behind the story the morals as it were. She is looking for something deeper that makes her think.
I wrote this a few months ago, inspired by the book Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite. I have had it work shopped at a writers camp I attended, but I just want to know what the great people of the internet think. Please judge fairly, but don't be an ass just for the sake of it.
This
It is almost like birth,
Something remembered, but not recalled.
I remember the dark lines and rivulets of blood,
The pale yellow gleam of sickly fat under the skin,
Thick organs being pulled out by their sinews,
And yet I cannot recall pain.
Dying is an experience I would gladly welcome again,
But only if I could witness it.
Like a bird from above
Watching myself being pulled apart.
Seeing orifices never explored.
The darkness came too quickly
I thought to myself, eyes blind, ears deaf
Swimming through the womb of afterlife.
I wished I had seen the latticework of veins deconstructed,
My fibres stretched until ripped,
Unresisting flesh yielding to sharp nails and teeth,
A cacophony of breaking bones.
It is almost like birth,
A body deconstructed, not formed.
(If you are not all that bright and cannot understand this poem, it is a about a murder victim that has become obsessed with his own death.)
I've no realized the idiocy of the last point in parenthesis I made.
I'm not sure why I did that.
Please ignore it. Please.
Can someone recommend a good book or author?
I've got the flu and laryngitis and will be off work for the next week at least.. TV makes me feel like a zombie and I've read everything I own too many times to commit to another re-read.
The last 2 books I've read are 'Soul kitchen' by Poppy Z Brite.
Liseys Story by Stephen King.
Can anyone recommend another author I might like or book I might not have heard of or read before?
I'll give almost anything a go =)
What is it about? I don't want the whole story. I just want to know the main subject. or what is it similar to. is it about vampires, witches, werewolves or ghosts, angles or whatever?
I'm attempting to purchase a signed & numbered 10th anniversary edition of a Poppy Z. Brite novel. The publisher is entirely sold out, and has been for some time, but I've found it on a private bookseller's website. Yes, it's the exact same book with all the added bonuses; publication was limited to 750 copies.
Anyone had good or bad experiences buying a collector's item this way? And yes, I've tried eBay.
Hoplite, thank you, I wouldn't have thought about quite a few of those!
Lost Souls-Poppy Z. Brite
Evernight-Claudia Grey
13 Bullets-David Wellington
Fangland-John Marks
The Rest Falls Away-Colleen Gleason
A Quick Bite-Lynsay Sands
For me, Pet Semetary, by Stephen King, really messed with my mind at night. Exquisite Corpse, by Poppy Z. Brite, was absolutely disgusting, too. But of course, they're two of my favorite authors, so how I could not love 'em? =]
Now how about you? I'm looking for lots to read this summer. And please, please, PLEASE - I'm sick of hearing about Twilight, thanks ahead of time.
Dennis - I agree, Math was truly terrifying!
JT - I loooved Cell!! Just finish reading it for the 2nd time!
Thank you all so much, you've come up with some great suggestions so far.
Haha, Je suis mieux! I certainly don't find Twilight offensive or irritating in any way...I just got a little bored with the same ol' suggestions over and over! Everyone, thank you! I've got some great suggestions for the library today!
Hollywood has a gift for tampering with perfection. However, being a well rounded reader gives an individual peace of mind knowing that Hollywood hasn't found all the good stories....yet. What original, smart, exciting, thoughtful, and/or terrifying stories based on previously published material would you like to see developed.
Here is my list in no sequential order:
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King (of course)
Exquiste Corspe by Poppy Z. Brite
Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk (might be a little too
Fight Clubish but with females instead)
Fell by Warren Ellis (Excellent Crime Noir)
Invisible Life by E. Lynn Harris
The Dark Beyond the Stars by Frank M. Robinson
Expendable by James Alan Gardner
Scene of the Crime: A Little Piece of Goodnight by Ed Brubaker

She was a breath of fresh air when she burst onto the horror scene but has since drifted into the terretory of 'I am up my own arse'. She should write some more horror.
i know this is a common question but i want links where i can actually find books by anne rice, ursula le guin, Poppy Z. Brite, and other fiction novels. I'm also looking for these titles:
Pimsleur- Spanish 1 Reading Booklet
Barron's Mastering Spanish Book
Countdown to Spanish - Learn to Communicate in 24 Hours
thanks!
Does anybody know where I can find the short story "Stay Awake" by Poppy Z Brite? It was first published as a chapbook by Camelot Books in 2000 and it was reprinted into a new copy of "Lost Souls" from Gauntlet Press that I would LOVE to have, but they're sold out
(http://www.gauntletpress.com/cgi-bin/gauntletpress/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=template&thispage=LostSouls&ORDER_ID=718492494)
If anybody has any idea where to find that story (online or at a store) I would be entirely grateful
What was so disturbing about it?
For me it was Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite
A homoerotic love story about two cannibalistic serial killers, it doesn't get much more bizarre than that. Her descriptions of violence are so visceral too. I was completely shocked and appalled after reading it.
I love reading fantasy books, especially ones about vampires, witches, werewolves and such... can u recommend any....I know the author's Laurel K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kelley Armstrong, Marjorie M. Liu, C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp, Poppy Z. Brite, Christine Feehan, Lilith Saintcrow, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Suzan Seizemore... I would prefer author's and books that are not the usual suspects... thanx in advance....
