Donna Tartt - Donna Tartt Questions
Question: Has anyone read The Little Friend by Donna Tartt?

Answer #1:
I liked it even more than "The Secret History" but I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the end. I was looking forward to finding out who killed Harriet's brother and I felt kind of cheated by the ending that Tartt provided. Still, I did enjoy Harriet as a character and liked reading about her family, especially her grandmother and all of her great-aunts. I was surprised that the book didn't get that many good reviews. It seems as though more people liked "The Secret History" better but not me.
Answer #2:
i also liked it better than "secret history." i read "lf" first & "sh" second & was perhaps expecting "sh" to be more like "lf" & it was so different that altho it was good, i prefered "lf." i wasn't particularly sympathetic to the characters in "sh" & didn't like them as much. i empathized more with harriet. i laughed out loud when they dropped the snake on the grandma driving the car!
i also was disappointed at the ending but i re-read it a few years later & understood the point of the ending. while it is annoying not to find out who the murderer was, that wasn't really the point of the story. it's harriet's journey, what she does to others, what she finds out about herself. i think a big them of the book was harriet taking responsibility for her actions.
i did think it ended in an odd place in that i wanted to see whether harriet would take responsibility for her actions & what her feelings were towards what she had done.
but overall i think it was a terrific book.
