Antonin Artaud was a French actor, director, and writer who is best known for his theories on theater and his concept of the "Theatre of Cruelty." Born in 1896, Artaud was a key figure in the Surrealist movement and was heavily influenced by the writings of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. In his writing and his work as a director, Artaud sought to break free from the constraints of traditional theater and create a new form of performance that would be more immediate and impactful. His ideas had a profound influence on the development of modern theater, and his work continues to be studied and debated to this day. Artaud passed away in 1948 at the age of 52.
