Can anyone recommend some beautiful love poetry for a wedding ceremony?

Hi everyone, I am getting married in October and I have just started to plan my order of service. I am looking for a really moving, beautiful poem about love or commitment, whether it is modern or classic, that can be read out at my wedding in October. It would be great if you could share all your ideas!

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote some beautiful love sonnets to her husband. You’ll find lots of her stuff online.

You can also use the “search by category” and “search by occasion” functions at this site to find love poems and wedding poems:

This is an Apache prayer said at weddings, I think it’s lovely.

Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be a shelter to each other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to each other.
Now there will be no loneliness,
For each of you will be companion to each other.
Now you are but two bodies,
But there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
To enter into your days of your togetherness,
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

And a passage from I Corinthians 13:4-8a in the Bible is often read at weddings, and is nice too.

I think you should get an anthology of love peoms from a bookshop, that’ll have plenty in.

Well its not a long poem but the words are lovely. It comes from an early 12th century correspondence between a man and a woman (unnamed) in the region of Troyes, Northern France….It made my Fiance melt..so here you go…

The more I drink my fill of your sweetness, the more I thirst.
All my wealth has gathered in you alone,
all I have power to do has its source in you.
So, that we may devote ourselves to each other,
you are I and I am you.

Joolz Denby – one of Britain’s most talented & (under-rated) contemporary poets and performers – has written a beauiful poem called “Wedding Song”.

    “WEDDING SONG

And underneath it all, two hands clasped:
Beyond the ritual and the words spoken,
out of time and the endless turning of the days.
    Each to each.

Each to comfort each, gentle against the high solitude
of life and the racing blood of it,
each to be kind to each, without thinking, reflexive -
the small love that is transcendent.
Each to be a shield burnished and bright
for the other, against the fury
that beats within and the great unknowable
    stretching fearfully before.

And underneath it all, underneath it all
    now and without ending,
all it means, all, perfect and true
in the moments and the years

two hands clasped and the lovers kiss,

    two hands clasped.”

THIS IS MY FAVORITE POEM EVER
It’s called “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” by Shakespeare

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
    That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Also check out Edna St Vincent Millay. She is my favorite poet.

    You are my everything
You are my hopes and my dreams
    You are my everything
So each day I love you
    Just a little more
    You are my everything
You are my hopes and my dreams
    You are my everything
    You’re all I ever wanted
    You are my everything
So each day I love you
    Just a little more
…. so each day I love you
    Just a little more
