Product Description

Published by Semiotext(e) to critical acclaim in 1998, Michelle Tea's debut novel The Passionate Mistakes and Intricate Corruption of One Girl in America quickly established Tea as an exciting new literary talent and the voice of a new generation of queer, bisexual, transgendered, and straight youth. The Village Voice called Passionate Mistakes "the legacy of thirty years of feminism," and Eileen Myles, writing in the Nation, hailed the novel as "a hunk of lyric information that coolly, then frantically, describes the car wreck of her generation."

The too-smart, caustic, and radiant narrator of Passionate Mistakes is, at twenty-seven, an ex-Goth, ex-drummer, ex-straight girl, ex-lesbian separatist vegan graduate of vocational high school in the working class town of Chelsea, Massachusetts. Written with lyrical precision and charm, the novel describes a journey with no final destination, a fast-paced and picaresque road trip that yields a redemptive vision of an America that has nothing left to offer its youth.

This new edition of a Semiotext(e) classic includes critical essays by Brandon Stosuy and Eileen Myles that describe Michelle Tea's achievement as a literary innovator and cultural icon.

Toube Said: I liked the book ( Nov. 27th 2008 )

As you can see with the other reviews, it is a book that does not let people untouched or indifferent.
I am not sure if my review comes too late (last review before mine was quite some time ago), but here it is anyway: I really liked the book. Obviously not everyone enjoys the style, but if you do it is a great read ... I recommend that you take a chance.

David Wellenbrock Said: --- ( Mar. 15th 2006 )

Maybe viewed as a sociological document, the book can be viewed as of some value. Ms. Tea documents about a decade of her life 14-24. Grew up in Boston area, seemed able to run into Boston and hang out with various crowds. Lots of drinking, living a "wild" life, I guess. Her boyfriend Ian, with whom sex was a chore. Moving into a lesbian life, which it almost appears she wills herself into because she does not seem to develop any sort of deep emotional attachment. She works some; has girlfriends; Lize gets her into whoring and they become a couple. Back and forth to Tucson a couple of times. Denouement, of sorts.

These facts are recorded, but there seems to be little in the way of facts from which one could discern how things went this way, what caused them. She expresses certain political views (capitalism is bad; feminism is good; environmentalism is good; etc.) but they seem to be adopted because they are politically correct among the crowd. She seems to have few views of her own and not much in the way of guiding principles. The book certainly does not seem to portray an attractive lifestyle; indeed, the author does not seem to enjoy much of it. While folks may have an occasional story which would be interesting to hear, the people are not interesting nor honorable. The life seems almost desparate, though Michelle seems to be able to plough through the life.

R. G. Rohrbaugh Said: Not for everyone ( Jan. 16th 2006 )

The typos and run-on sentences were killing me, but this memoir was hard to put down and definitely worth my time.

just some Said: worth a read if you like ms. tea ( Oct. 18th 2005 )

although this wasn't a life changing, earth shattering book by any means i thought it was worth my time. it was fun and personable. a good first attempt and worth a read when you consider the effect she has had on young, queer liturature. don't expect perfect prose or classic liturature, but if you're looking to kill a few hours with a "querky" queer gal or want to read the debut by the author of valencia, than give this book a shot.

J. D. DeBacker Said: The Painful Mistake I Made by Buying this . . ( Aug. 25th 2004 )

Ugh! This is my third attempt to read a Ms. Tea product, who is very highly respected, etc. But boy, she is just not my type. However, I am certain, based on my interactions with many of my people, that there is a HUGE audience for this stuff. Just not for me. And by writing this review, I'm hoping to sear into my memory that I found this book horrible and don't need to buy anything else by Ms. Tea!
