| Zine Scene Bios Ten cool things about Francesca Lia Block 1. She is one of the most beamed-in, brilliant writers I have ever read! All of her books are awesome. There are not many writers who have such a magnificent grasp of imagery mixed with incredibly inspiring stories and messages, and Slinkster Cool characters and worlds, magical yet edgy and raw. She's my writing idol! 2. She's been interviewed and mentioned in countless zines - there's even one called Weetzie Bat, devoted to her book. 3. Her ADORABLE dog Vincent Van Go Go Boots. You can play with the long patch of hair on his head and it stays wherever you put it - even shooting straight up. 4. She eats as oddly as I do. Non-dairy brown-rice-sweet butterscotch pudding, a shared fave! 5. She was punk WAAAY back when, slamming at clubs in L.A. with her constantly changing hair color. 6. She loves fairies - BOTH KINDS! 7. She comes from an incredible family of artists and poets. 8. She really cares about contributing to others, giving all she can, moving and inspiring and educating. 9. She's an amazing dancer. From ballet to...well, let's just say I've seen her go CRAAAZY on the dance floor. 10. When she's inspired, WATCH OUT! She's written incredible screenplays in a week, books in not much longer than that. Hillary Carlip Things you should know about Hillary 1. She wrote the awesome book Girl Power: Young Women Speak Out that shows how finding your voice can be empowering and even life-saving. (And she was on Oprah, who did a whole show on the book!) 2. She gives so much support to everyone she comes in contact with and always sees the positive side of a situation. 3. She is one of the hottest screenwriters in Hollywood and is so modest that a lot of people don't even know she writes scripts. 4. She is extremely cute and has some of the hippest pairs of pants around. 5. She makes beautiful altar-like art out of found objects: Pin-up girls fried egg Virgin Mary gum ball machine worlds. 6. She was the lead singer Angel, of the all-girl band Angel and The Reruns, in the 80s, and wrote and sang the punk hit "Buffy Come Back" (about Buffy of the TV show Family Affair OD-ing). 7. She has been volunteering her time and talent for years at a treatment center for abused and abandoned teenage girls. 8. She has a dog named Monster; a red, green, and yellow storybook Craftsman-style house; and one of the raddest love-mates in the world. 9. She's been keeping journals since she was 13, filling them with writings, drawings, collages, poems, found shopping lists, cookie fortunes, ticket stubs, etc. They were like zines before anyone knew what zines were. 10.
