| Francesca Lia Block is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I just read her newest book, Girl Goddess #9, which I loved, so I decided to write to her and ask her a few questions for this zine--sort of like an interview. Well, I got a letter in reply. She answered all my questions and wrote a nice note! First is the note, and then the questions and her answers. Enjoy! =) Dear Jessica- Thank you for your letter! Good luck with your zine! I'm writing a non-fiction book about zines called Zinemania with Hillary Carlip who wrote Girl Power. I hope these answers are helpful. Best, Francesca JW: How and when did you get started writing? Have you always known you wanted to be a writer? FLB: I've always loved to write. My mom used to write down things I said when I was little so that encouraged me. I wrote poetry and short stories from early on and was lucky to find support in my family. JW: Of all the stories in Girl Goddess #9, which one is your favorite? Why? FLB: "Girl Goddess #9" is (today) because I like the voices of the girls. They flowed when I wrote it. I also like "Dragons in Manhattan" because of what it says about love. JW: Are any of your stories based on something that has happened to you? Which one(s)? FLB: All my work has some relationship to my life. JW: Is it true they are working on a Weetzie Bat movie? If so, when will it be out? FLB: Julie Hickson is writing a script based on Weetzie Bat and Witch Baby. I don't know what will happen with it, but the script is great. JW: If you could give advice to grrls who want to pursue a career in writing, what would it be? FLB: Read a lot. Read classic quality stuff and fun books you love. Write about what gets you excited, makes you joyful or gives you pain. Don't censor yourself. Don't limit your imagination or emotions. Be honest. Find someone you trust to give you supportive feedback. Have fun! FLB Fanzine |
