Award-winning author Hillary Carlip catapulted the phrase GIRL POWER out into the world when she wrote the groundbreaking book "Girl Power: Young Women Speak Out". Inspiring countless young women when it was published in 1995 and continuing to do so through the years, "Girl Power" was one of the first books to give teen girls a forum to speak out. At girlpower.com, you can read excerpts from the book, check out the props GP has gotten and... what else? EXPRESS YOURSELVES!
This is not a community about weight loss. This is a size-positive community. This community is about self image. It is about being happy with who you are now, not the potential you have to be “skinny.” This community is about self-esteem. This community is a safe-space from societal pressure to conform to the “perfect” body image. This community is separated from the “real world” in that we exist to promote size-acceptance, regardless of the size a person is. Though we are aware of the horrors of the pressure put upon us to be thin, we in this community reject those pressures. This is a community that we can turn to for support in fighting size oppression. This community is for people of all sizes to come together in order to support each other. We reject societal standard of beauty and blatantly make the claim that we are beautiful JUST THE WAY WE ARE. It does not matter if you are a size 0 or a size 99; this is a place for you to be accepted.
