May Sarton's estate goes on the auction block in Portland, Maine, and Frances Lefkowitz is there to see the fans of the late poet bid on everything from dish towels to vintage books. With the priciest lot — a portrait of the author — going for $5,000, this was definitely a low-budget affair, and as May Sarton's possessions get split up and carted off, sold and resold, her writing is the only thing that stands a chance of remaining whole.
