André Breton was a French writer and poet who is best known as the founder of Surrealism. Born in 1896, Breton was a key figure in the Dada movement before becoming interested in the theories of Sigmund Freud and the power of the unconscious mind. In 1924, he published the Surrealist Manifesto, which outlined the principles of Surrealism and established the movement as a major force in the world of art and literature. Throughout his career, Breton wrote poetry, novels, and essays that explored the world of dreams and the unconscious, and he played a central role in the Surrealist movement until his death in 1966.
