What does that sentence mean? "Done Maxim a power of good too, besides being easier from your point of view."
The context is:
(Maxim is the speaking woman's brother. She talks to the Maxim's new wife.)
'I think it's a pity you came back to Manderley so soon,' said Beatrice, 'it would have been far better to potter about in Italy for three or four months, and then come back in the middle of the summer. Done Maxim a power of good too, besides being easier from your point of view. I can't help feeling it's going to be rather a strain here for you at first.'
My Great Grandmother was Joyce Beatrice Williford she was adopoted and this was her adopted name, her mother was Ida Mary McQueen, of North Carolina, I don't know any more on this except that she was married more than once, the first time to Clyde Percy Holland originally of Virginia, and he was in the Army. And a second time to someone with the last name of Potter. She may have been married in between there some time I am not sure. Also I know that my Great grandfather Clyde Percy was said to have been married before he married Joyce. Joyce was said to have married him young and there was at 28 years difference in their ages. If anyone could give me any help or advice that would be GREAT! Thank you all in advance!
Sweet Aunt J.
Ida Mary adopted Joyce. McQueen was her maiden name.
I have no idea when anyone was born, Joyce or Jucie as we all called her passed away in either 2001. It sounds like that might be her in the second post. I wish it was Harry that would be awesome.
Just found out from My grandmama that Joyce died on Dec. 30th 2001 she was buried in 2002 because it was after new years day. Also Clyde Percy was born in 1904, in Myrtle, Virginia. I was able to find a WWII record of him listing him as Clyde Perry Holland. I also just found out that he lied about his age and joined the national guard at the age of 16, then transfered to the Army. His parents died when he was young of tuberculosis (sp) and he lived with his brother and his brothers wife until he was 14 then he left home and lived in boxcars off and on until he finally turned 16.
I am thinking :
Beatrice Francisco
Bertha Anne
Kaci DeMaria
Eileen Hudson
Winnie Potter
Excuse me, <3, but i think you re the nut case, not me! so please either delete your answer, or i will report you. Thanks =)
I am seeking genealogical information on Sydney and Beatrice Webb. Who their family members were, preferably ancestors of them. And any information on the other Webb's in the family too.
I was watching the Beatrice Potter movie "The tale of Samuel Whiskers" with my nephew and i noticed that the big rat has a tin in his pocket that he dips his finger in then sniffs whatever it is up his nose! I grew up watching these movies and I've never noticed this until now. Can someone please tell me what Samuel Whiskers is sniffing?

I will be having twins in September and my boyfriend and I just found out we're having a boy and a girl! We would like to have opinions on some names we're considering. We travel a lot for our jobs (as in living in other countries) so we're looking for names that are easily pronounced in other languages, especially in French. We still haven't decided on what the last name will be, it's between Bell, Canning-Bell, Bell-Canning or Canning.
Here's what we've found so far (girl, then boy):
Madeleine (Maddie?) and Oliver
Beatrice and Lawrence
Justine and Nicholas
Charlotte and Alexander
Katie (maybe Katherine?) and Thomas
Blake and Samuel
We really like Beatrice because it works in a lot of languages, but it's pretty rare in English, so we're hesitating. Katie was also one of our favorites, but then we thought about Katie Bell in Harry Potter, and now we're not so sure. What do you think?
Feel free to mix the names up. Thank you so much!
Like bloody Anne Hathaway playing Jane Austen
Renee Zellwegger playing Bridget Jones (with that accent that no self respecting English woman has) and Beatrice Potter.
Or Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood
Any other suggestions?
Why does Hollywood have to try and Americanise everything?
Look at Lord of the Rings (which I hate) hardly anyone in that was British and it is actually a British book.
Or Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate factory?
At least the Doctor Who and Harry Potter series has managed to stick to the Brit casts.
I'm not being Anti-American, it's just insulting, especially when the actors can't pull it off, either be convincing or don't bother.
Sory but Johnny Depp can't do a good English accent, he did a really good Scottish accent in Finding Neverland though.
Can you actually name a really good performance by an American actor as a Brit?
Actually there are a lot of British actors these days that are famous in the States.
i have an assortment of figures but am unsure what the stamps represent. I have just bought a book thinking it would have this info but it did not. thanks anne
