I want to discover some new authors. I also love reading David Sedaris, Dorothy Allison, poetry by jim morrison, ginsberg, whitman, sandra cisneros, rimbaud, adrienne rich, e.e. cummings, kerouac, saul williams.... any ideas on other authors I might like?
I just read Bastard out of Carolina. I particularly liked the characters and dialogue. It was just so authentically southern. What is your favorite Dorothy Allison book?
I am talking about authors who aren't necessarily genre writers. For example NO vampire, scifi, romance novels.
Some people I'm thinking of are:
George Saunders
Cormac McCarthy
Budd Schulberg
Chris Bachelder
Dorothy Allison
Toni Morrison
Rebecca Solnit
David Sedaris
John Le Carre
I was asking for NON-genre writers, NOT vampires, sci fi, etc. jk rowling, anne rice and that twilight author are genre writers.
I was trying to keep the list focused on unique voices in writing, like martin amis, atwood, etc
Thanks for all the responses!!
i love the answers already posted! Anyone have another living breathing author to add? I'm looking to broaden my horizons..
thanks.
The Things They Carried -Tim O' Brien
The Handmaid's Tale -Margaret Atwood
Fences -August Wilson
The Merchant of Venice -William Shakespeare
Bastard out of Carolina -Dorothy Allison
Love in the Time of Cholera -Gabriel G. Marquez
Saturday -Ian McEwan
Tender Is the Night -F. Scott Fitzgerald
All the Pretty Horses -Cormac MacCarthy
This is my list for summer reading. I have to pick 1 of the books to read. Any comments on the list of books above? Which book/books did you enjoy?
Thank you.
No, I'm not a student and I'm not asking for homework help.
I'm a librarian, and I'm trying to make a list of award winning lesbian historical fiction. For some reason, "lesbian" is a subject heading on the book Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison. But I can't find any reviews, reports, or summaries that say anything about there being any lesbians in the book!
If anyone has read this book, can you tell me first, is there any lesbian content? And would you recommend the book to lesbians looking for historical fiction?
Thanks a bunch everyone :-)
I just finished reading a Dorothy Allison novel, and I've also enjoyed Tawny O'Dell's work. Wondering if you know of any others out there that are not necessarily "Southern Lit"?
I'm reading "Trash" by Dorothy Allison. She is one of my favorite women writers. Some of my favorites are Melanie Rae Thon, Barbra Kingsolver, Anne Lamott, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Toni Morrison. Can anyone recommend some lesser known women writers?

This is one of my all time favorite books and I just wanted to know how many others had read it and their thoughts on it--and any other books they could recommend.
My friend told me that this was a very good book. The author has a unique way of describing things...IT'S ABOUT A GIRL NAME BONE (NICKNAME)
It seems like it is a story about a black family and a white family back in the day About family violence and incest, yet remain whole and human, as the book says...........You will not be able to put this one down......Run to your nearest book store and purchase this great novel...............$10.95
